HRAN Commends Osun State on the Passage of its Protection Against Domestic Violence Law of 2013

Human Rights Agenda Network (HRAN) commends the executive, legislature and entire People of State of Osun for their giant stride in the justice sector, by passing into Law, the Protection Against Domestic Violence Law of 2013. HRAN notes that the importance and values of this Law can never be over-emphasized, and so urges the government and people of the State to ensure effective applicability of the Law in the State. A similar version of this Law is currently before the Senate at the Federal level and has been passed by some other States like Ekiti, Lagos etc.

Domestic violence is a cankerworm, dreaded but very present in every society. It has destroyed families and societies over the years, thus the need for every civilized society to fashion out ways of check-mating the excesses, if not eradicate it entirely. The human rights sector is more curious about this social ill as it affects more, the most vulnerable members of the society.

The State of Osun law is aimed at providing protection against domestic violence and ensuring a speedy justice dispensation to victims of domestic violence. The 19 section Law expressly provides that ‘no person shall commit act of domestic violence against any person’; thereby providing protection to vulnerable persons such as women and children. The Law also provides for interim protection order in favour of a complainant, pursuant to a domestic violence.

HRAN identifies with the good works going on in the justice sector of Osun State, and pledges its commitment and determination to work with Osun State for more innovative and life changing results. As the State approaches an election period, the people are admonished to uphold a violence free electioneering and ensure the protection of vulnerable people in the State.

The disappointment I felt is the same the man beside me must have felt when shortly before the prayers he was lamenting: “First, they said, we were uneducated, so we went to school. Now that we’ve gone to school, there are no jobs for us. The few that have jobs have not been paid for monthsShortly after the prayers, I noticed commotion. There were water sachets and stones flying in the air – all directed at the direction whe...
