Osun Assembly Approve 65 Years As Retirement Age

The State of Osun House of Assembly has passed the bill seeking the extension of the retirement age of teaching and non-teaching staff of the state-owned tertiary institutions from 60 to 65 years.
The bill was passed sequel to a motion moved by the leader of House, Honourable Timothy Owoeye on Thursday shortly after it passed through the committee of whole and necessary ammendment were made from clauses one to four.

The teaching and non-teaching teaching staff of the institutions have been on strike since February over their demand for the extension of the retirement age among other agitations.

The Speaker, Honourable Najeem Salaam was optimistic that the passage of the bill would resolve the crisis between the staff of the tertiary institutions and the government.

"By the passage of this bill, I think we have resolved the issue of the retirement age that has been a contention in our tertiary institutions.

"I believe with this exercise that we have done, the teaching and non-teaching staff would return to work. "If there is any other agitation, I think that can be resolved when they resume work, at least, for the sake of our children who have been at home and wasted time on their academic pursuit", he said.

The speaker said the house gave the bill the required accelerated hearing because the government was not comfortable with the strike action.
